The history behind the month of March

March is the third month of the year and was initially named after the Roman god Mars. The month was later renamed for Julius Caesar, who was born in March. March is also the month when the first day of spring falls. In the Northern Hemisphere, this is usually March 20 or 21. In the Southern Hemisphere, it falls on September 22 or 23.

March has always been considered a lucky month, perhaps because it represents the start of new life after winter. In ancient times, people believed that March was a time when spirits could reach out and affect the living world. This led to many superstitions about the month, such as not cutting your nails on a Saturday (because it would give bad luck to your family).

Today, March continues to be a time of new beginnings, as it is the first month of spring in the Northern Hemisphere. It is also a time to celebrate Irish heritage, as St. Patrick’s Day falls this month. In addition, March is National Women’s History Month in the United States.

The birthstone for the month of March is the beautiful aquamarine. This semiprecious stone ranges in color from pale blue to deep green, making it the perfect accessory for any outfit. Additionally, March is the flower month for the daffodil, a symbol of rebirth and new beginnings. Daffodils are often associated with springtime, so they make the perfect addition to any springtime celebration. Finally, March also happens to be the star sign month for Pisces. Those born under this sign are said to be compassionate and imaginative, making them great friends and confidantes. So whether you’re celebrating a birthday, looking forward to springtime, or simply enjoying the company of a Pisces friend, remember that March has something special for everyone.

Holidays In The Month Of March

Woman’s History Month

Woman’s History Month is celebrated every year in the month of March. It is a time to reflect on the achievements of women throughout history and to celebrate the progress that has been made towards equality. There are many ways to celebrate Woman’s History Month. Here are just a few ideas:

  • Educate yourself about the accomplishments of women throughout history. This can be done by reading books, watching documentaries, or even just doing a quick internet search. The more you know about the achievements of women, the more you can appreciate how far we have come.
  • Share your knowledge with others. Once you have learned about the accomplishments of women, take the time to share what you have learned with others. This can be done by writing articles, giving speeches, or even just talking to people about it. The more people who are aware of the progress that has been made, the better.
  • Support women-owned businesses. One way to make a difference is to support companies that are owned by women. When you spend your money at these businesses, you are helping to empower women and encourage entrepreneurship.
  • Celebrate the women in your life. Take the time to show appreciation for the women in your life who have made a difference. This can be done by telling them how much you appreciate them, buying them gifts, or simply spending time with them. Showing appreciation is a great way to show your support for equality.

National Deaf History Month

National Deaf History Month celebrates the achievements of people who are deaf or hard of hearing and raises awareness about the deaf community’s rich culture and history. The month of March was chosen for National Deaf History Month because it marks the date when three influential deaf leaders, Edward Miner Gallaudet, Alexander Graham Bell, and Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet, met to discuss the education of deaf children. This meeting led to the establishment of Gallaudet University, now the world’s only university specifically for deaf or hard-of-hearing students. National Deaf History Month is a time to remember the accomplishments of deaf individuals and to educate others about deaf culture.

Saint Patricks Day

Saint Patrick’s Day is a cultural and religious celebration held on 17 March, the traditional death date of Saint Patrick, the foremost patron saint of Ireland. Saint Patrick’s Day was made an official Christian feast day in the early seventeenth century and is observed by the Catholic Church, the Anglican Communion (especially the Church of Ireland), the Eastern Orthodox Church, and Lutheranism. The day commemorates Saint Patrick and the arrival of Christianity in Ireland, as well as celebrates the heritage and culture of the Irish in general. Celebrations generally involve public parades and festivals, cèilidhs, and the wearing of green attire or shamrocks. Christians also attend church services, and the Lenten restrictions on eating and drinking alcohol are lifted for the day. Saint Patrick’s Day is a bank holiday in Northern Ireland, but not in the rest of Ireland.

Mardi Gras

Mardi Gras is a festive season that occurs before the Christian fasting period of Lent. The term “Mardi Gras” is French for “Fat Tuesday,” referring to the practice of feasting and indulgence before the start of Lent. Mardi Gras celebrations typically involve parades, costumes, and parties with music and dancing. The first recorded Mardi Gras celebration took place in Mobile, Alabama, in 1703. Today, Mardi Gras is celebrated around the world, with significant festivities taking place in New Orleans, Rio de Janeiro, and Sydney. Whether you’re attending a parade or throwing a party, Mardi Gras is a great time to celebrate with friends and family.

Ash Wednesday

Ash Wednesday is a day of fasting and repentance in preparation for Easter. It falls on the first Wednesday of Lent, which is the 40-day period leading up to Easter Sunday. Ash Wednesday gets its name from the practice of placing ashes on the foreheads of Christians as a sign of repentance. The ashes are usually made from palm leaves that were blessed the previous year on Palm Sunday. Ash Wednesday is observed by many Western Christian denominations, including the Catholic Church, the Anglican Communion, and Lutheranism. In recent years, some Protestant churches have also begun to observe Ash Wednesday.
