Everything you need to know about June 2023

The month of June derives its name from the Roman goddess Juno, the wife of Jupiter and the patron goddess of marriage. In ancient Rome, weddings were not held during the month of May, as it was considered to be bad luck. Instead, couples would wait until June, when they would pray to Juno for a happy and prosperous marriage. The tradition of weddings in June eventually spread to other cultures, and the month came to be associated with love and happiness. Today, June is still considered an auspicious month for getting married, and many couples choose to tie the knot during this time of year.

Although it is now mostly associated with weddings and romance, the month of June has also been steeped in controversy throughout history. In 1967, same-sex marriages were illegal in all 50 states, but that began to change on June 12th of that year, when the state of Michigan became the first to strike down its anti-sodomy laws. This event paved the way for other states to follow suit, and within a decade, sodomy laws had been overturned across the country. Today, June is celebrated as a time for vacation, relaxation, and, of course, weddings! Some fun facts about the month of June:

  • The flower of the month of June is the rose. The rose is a symbol of love and beauty, but it also has a dark side. The thorns of the rose can represent the pain of love, and the red hue of the blossoms can symbolize blood. In mythology, the rose is often associated with tragedy and death.
  • The star signs that fall in June are Gemini and Cancer. Gemini is an air sign associated with communication and intellect. Cancer is a water sign associated with emotion and intuition. These two signs are in opposition to each other, making June a month of tension and conflicting energies.
  • The birthstone for June is a pearl. Pearls are said to represent wisdom and purity, but they can also symbolize sadness and tears. In some cultures, pearls are thought to be unlucky, as they are said to be made from the tears of angels.

June is a complex month, full of contradictory energies and symbols. It is a time of both light and dark, a time of both growth and decay. But ultimately, it is a time for celebration – for celebrating life in all its forms.

Popular Holidays and Observances on the June 2023 Calendar

Wondering what makes June so special? Here are some of the most popular holidays and observances that fall in the month of June:

Father’s Day

Father’s Day is a holiday celebrated on the third Sunday in June. It is a day to honor fathers and father figures, such as grandfathers and stepfathers. Father’s Day is not a federal holiday, but it is recognized as a special day by many people.

Father’s Day is typically celebrated with gifts, cards, and phone calls or visits from family members. Common gift items include ties, power tools, and gift certificates to favorite restaurants or stores. Many children make handmade gifts for their fathers. Breakfast in bed is also a popular Father’s Day tradition. Other activities may include going out to eat at a favorite restaurant, attending a ball game, or taking a family trip together. Fathers may also receive cards from their children or grandchildren.

Juneteenth

Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration of the ending of slavery in the United States. It is observed on June 19th, the day that Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, with news that the war had ended and that all slaves were to be freed. While technically no enslaved persons were freed on that day – it would take another two and a half months for the last slaves to be freed – Juneteenth has come to symbolize freedom and the end of oppression for African Americans.

There are a variety of ways that Juneteenth is celebrated across the country. In some communities, there are parades or street festivals with music and dancing. Others may hold picnics or cookouts. Some people choose to spend time with family, while others use the day as an opportunity to learn more about African American history and culture. However it is observed, Juneteenth is a day of joy and pride for black Americans.

Summer Solstice

The summer solstice happens when the sun is directly over the Tropic of Cancer. This happens once a year and marks the beginning of summer. On the day with the longest period of daylight, the sun shines for more than 16 hours. The longest day of the year is different for everyone depending on where they live in the world. In the Northern Hemisphere, the summer solstice falls on June 20 or 21. This date marks the beginning of summer and the end of spring. It’s also known as Midsummer or Litha. For those in the Southern Hemisphere, the winter solstice happens on June 20 or 21 and signals the beginning of winter.

The word “solstice” comes from the Latin word solstitium, which means “sun stands still.” This is because, at this time, the sun appears to stand still in the sky before reversing direction and starting to move south again. The summer solstice isn’t just a day for celebrations. It’s also an important day for astronomy. On this day, Earth’s tilt toward the sun is at its maximum, giving us our longest day and shortest night.

Pride Month

June is Pride Month, a time when people across the globe come together to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community. Pride Month originated in 1970, one year after the Stonewall Riots when police raided a gay bar in New York City. The raid sparked protests and demonstrations from the LGBTQ+ community, which ultimately led to the first Pride Parade in June of 1970. Since then, Pride Month has grown to become a global celebration, with events and festivals taking place in cities around the world. During Pride Month, people of all genders and sexualities come together to celebrate diversity and raise awareness about the struggles that LGBTQ+ people face.

World Infertility Awareness Month

World Infertility Awareness Month is celebrated every June to bring attention to the issues surrounding fertility and infertility. The month-long event is an opportunity for people who have struggled with fertility problems to share their stories and raise awareness about the challenges they face. During the month, there are often events and activities held to educate others about fertility issues and promote ways to prevent or overcome them. World Infertility Awareness Month is a time to come together and support those who have difficulty conceiving. It is also a chance to learn more about fertility and how we can all help those struggling with this issue.

Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month

Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month is celebrated in June each year. The month is dedicated to raising awareness of Alzheimer’s disease and other brain disorders, as well as promoting brain health. During the month, many organizations host events and campaigns to educate the public about these conditions. Alzheimer’s Association chapters across the country hold walks and fundraisers to support research and provide care and support services for those affected by Alzheimer’s.

The American Brain Coalition also sponsors brain awareness events during the month, including educational webinars and a national lobby day. By spreading awareness and understanding of Alzheimer’s and other brain disorders, we can help to improve the lives of those affected by these conditions.
