Everything you should know about April 2023

The month of April has a long and storied history. Though it is now considered the beginning of spring, it was once the second month of the year. This is because the Roman calendar began in March, and April was named for the goddess Venus. The name “April” comes from the Latin word “aperire,” which means “to open.” This is fitting, as April is when nature begins to awaken after a long winter’s sleep.

April has always been a month of change and new beginnings. In ancient times, it was the traditional time for Roman soldiers to go to war. It was also the month when new crops were planted, and animals were born. In the middle ages, April Fool’s Day became popular, and it is still celebrated today. In more recent history, April has been designated as National Poetry Month and National Garden Month. So whether you’re looking back at its long history or celebrating the present, there’s no doubt that April is a special month.

April is famously associated with showers (and, by extension, rainbows). But did you know that this month also has its own seasonably appropriate birthstone, flower, and star sign? The birthstone of April is the diamond, which comes from the Greek word “adamas” meaning “unbreakable.” This gem was once believed to bring courage to its wearer and ward off bad luck. The flower of April is the sweet pea, a delicate and fragrant bloom that comes in a variety of colors. As for April’s star sign, that would be Aries, the first sign of the zodiac. Represented by the Ram, people born under this sign are said to be independent, pioneering, and full of energy. So there you have it: everything you need to know about April!

Popular Holidays and Observances on the April 2023 Calendar

Curious about what the most popular holidays and observances are in April? Here’s a quick rundown:

April Fools

April Fool’s Day is a day when friends and family members can play practical jokes on each other. The tradition dates back to the 1500s when French people began celebrating the first day of the new year on April 1. Over time, April Fool’s Day became a day for people to play jokes on each other.

Today, people around the United States celebrate April Fool’s Day by playing tricks on their loved ones. Common pranks include:

  • Telling someone that their shoelaces are untied.
  • Putting a whoopee cushion on a chair.
  • Hiding a toy on someone’s desk.

While some people enjoy playing April Fool’s Day pranks, others prefer to stay away from the madness. But, no matter how you choose to celebrate, April Fool’s Day is a fun-filled day for all!

Easter Day

Easter Day is a Christian holiday that celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ. It is typically observed with religious services and special meals; many people exchange gifts or decorate Easter eggs. The date of Easter varies from year to year, but it always falls on a Sunday in late March or early April. In the Western Christian tradition, Easter is preceded by Lent, 40 days of fasting and repentance. This period of self-denial culminates on Holy Saturday when Christians remember Christ’s death on the cross. Then, on Easter Sunday, Christians joyfully celebrate Christ’s resurrection and the hope of eternal life that it brings. For many people, Easter is a time to come together with family and friends to rejoice in the triumph of life over death.

Ramadan

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and is observed by Muslims worldwide as a month of fasting, prayer, reflection, and community. The word “Ramadan” comes from the Arabic root r-m-d, which means “scorching heat” or “dryness.” The month of Ramadan falls during the time of year when the days are longest and the nights are shortest, making it a particularly challenging time to fast. However, Muslims believe that the physical and spiritual benefits of fasting are well worth the effort.

Muslims fast from dawn to dusk during Ramadan and refrain from eating, drinking, smoking, and sexual activity during this time. Instead, they focus on prayer, Quran recitation, and charitable acts. At the end of the month, Muslims celebrate Eid al-Fitr, a joyous occasion marked by feasting and celebration with family and friends. Ramadan is a special time for Muslims all over the world and is a reminder of the importance of self-control, compassion, and generosity.

Passover

Passover is a holiday that commemorates the liberation of the Israelites from slavery in ancient Egypt. The name of the holiday comes from the story of the Exodus, in which God passed over the homes of the Israelites while punishing the Egyptians with a plague. Today, Passover is celebrated with a special meal called a seder, which includes dishes such as matzo (unleavened bread) and charoset (a sweet mixture made from fruits and nuts). During the seder, families tell the story of the Exodus and enjoy each other’s company. Many people also give gifts to charity during Passover as a way of giving back to those who are less fortunate. By celebrating this holiday, we remember our history and give thanks for our freedom.
